Covington County Genealogical and Historical Society honor Vietnam veterans | News
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The Covington County Genealogical and Historical Society took the time out to honor many Vietnam veterans on Saturday.
As a way to recognize the Covington County men who served during the Vietnam Era, the Genealogical and Historical Society decided to host their first annual Vietnam veteran’s awards ceremony at the old Seminary Depot.
Each Vietnam veteran received a certificate of appreciation as well as recorded their names on a roll of honor so that they would always be remembered for their services and sacrifices.
“They came back and people didn’t understand, and maybe they didn’t get the appreciation that they deserved from them, so we wanted to do that today,” said President of the Covington County Genealogical and Historical Society William Rogers.
With more than 30 Vietnam veterans attending the ceremony, the Genealogical and Historical Society where certainly surprised by the turnout.
A motion was also agreed on by the veterans and the county for the plan to place a Vietnam veteran’s monument on the grounds of the court house in Collins. The next step for the motion will be in December where it will be taken to the board of supervisors.
